Our Story

In the 1990's a vision came to life and the journey of Bright Boarding Kennels began...

With Lesley's dream and Jim's two hands the couple turned what once was a paddock into the kennels that we know and love today. Opening in 1992 under the name of 'Aspens Kennel & Cattery' the kennels quickly became a solution for many travelers. Lesley's big heart lead the family to taking on all kinds of small to medium animals... From rabbits, to ferrets, to birds! You name it Lesley looked after it! After 20 years of pouring their hearts into the animals that came their way; it was time for Lesley and Jim to move onto the next chapter of their lives. With many fond memories in their hearts they pitched the 'For Sale' sign and soon after they answered a call to a man by the name of David Boyer.

Originally from Portland Vic, David moved up to the Alpine Shire for a breath of fresh air in 2020 to take on management of the local pub. With a change of pace in mind, David took a leap of faith and started Bright Boarding Kennels in 2022. Growing up in Portland David was a natural hunter. After years of dedicating time to this art, he stepped it up a level and embarked on the journey of hunting dogs. First came Alita a German Short-haired Pointer (GSP) and then Asland a Stag-hound, who he trained from youth. With his dedication to harnessing the dogs natural instincts, Alita and Asland became highly skillful hunting dogs providing the household with an abundance of food. So when the opportunity came about to steer his career into animal care David took on the challenge with pure passion and excitement!

A year and a half down the track life dealt David an unlucky hand as he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Up until June 2024 David had devoted his life to the kennels only hiring help from a local lady Karen Ward to allow him a couple mornings a week of respite. Although as winter rolled around David knew in his heart that he needed help, so with a call out on the community Facebook page a young chap Luke Breaden replied eager to support David in whatever way he could.  With the thumbs up from Karen, Luke was hired as the new BBK Manager!

Luke had just wrapped up his fifth year as an Outdoor Guide and had recently returned to Bright from a four month road-trip around Tasmania with his partner Arliah Varnel. Looking to align work with supporting the local community, David provided him with an opportunity to do so. On the 6th of November David passed away with a heart full of love and trust that his beloved dogs and kennels would be well looked after.

Over the previous 6 months Luke & the BBK staff were apprehensive to what would happen to the kennels, until David's best mate Doug contacted Luke to inform him that David wished for him to continue on his legacy.

Luke and Arliah are inspired by all dogs/cats and the stories that come with them. To provide a space for dogs to return to their natural instincts of 'Pack Mentality' so that they can learn and grow from each other is an extremely rewarding experience.

"Being travelers ourselves we understand how difficult it is to leave your pets behind. This is why we're so passionate about providing a safe space for every dog/cat to enjoy. Big or small, young or old, we strive to create an enjoyable, personable & nurturing space for your furry friend! This way everyone can go on holiday!"
